Are you smoking the cigarette or is the cigarette smoking you?
Often times in life, we are doing things that we don't really want to do. These may be things apparently for our pleasure, but it is far from pleasurable. This is the time to sit back and ask, am i smoking the cigarette or is the cigarette smoking me?
An example will help to illustrate the point. You exercise to stay fit. But there is no real passion or pleasure in it for you. You go about it in a lazy, mechanical and lethargic fashion. Though you are devoting all the time and effort to it, the effects are far from ideal. The cigarette is smoking you. Instead if the same exercise was done with awareness and deep attention to your muscles, body, energy centres, layers of energy that we hold in ourselves, the effects would be quite different. You would tap into the boundless energy you hold within and really feel energized and efficient at the end of it. You would be smoking the cigarette.
Another example is with addiction itself. It could be to alcohol, smoking, sex, shopping, or any other desire. Uncontrolled desires weaken the will. They make us irrational and take away our clarity. If we keep giving into desires without looking at them rationally, examining them with the light of free will and discrimination, they will be our masters. We will become slaves. The cigarette smokes us, the alcohol drinks us. There is no harm in controlled activities for pure pleasure. But when the pleasure turns to pain, the enjoyment to addiction, this is something to be aware of and watch. Loss of rationality is dangerous. It leads to delusion which finally has serious consequences.
Sometimes the so-called good things can also be addictions - work is the best example. If you become a slave to your work, you could also be escaping from something else. The inability to face other parts of your life makes you a workaholic. Your work culture is smoking you like a cigarette. You may be burning away your health, family life, friends, recreation time, interests. Think about it and don't let your work become a cigarette thats burning you through and through.
Go, smoke that cigarette by all means. As long as it does not smoke you.
P.S. Smoking more than a certain number of cigarette per day is dangerous to your health anyway ;-)!
